Web application redesign and significant user testing
Overview
The task was to redesign the internal insurance application for external users.
The redesign included updating the visual library to the latest brand style guide.
The application was developed by two product teams, one in Poland and the other in Ireland. The product was targeted at the Brazilian market where the main stakeholders were located, while the business was located in the United States. The biggest challenge was collaboration across four time zones and translation issues between three languages
Assumptions & Discovery
The goal was to redesign a web application used for issuing specific insurance policies for corporate employees so that it could be used to a limited extent by external users. The task also involved updating the UI to the latest style guide. The implementation of the application was preceded by a discovery phase and usability testing on prototypes.
The discovery phase involved in-depth research related to presentations of competitive applications conducted by target users using Portuguese translators. The next stage involved 3-day workshops to verify assumptions and business goals.
Design
The first stage was to start with wireframes and analyze user stories. In the meantime, the entire design system was updated to the latest company style guide.
The next stage was to create complete prototypes with the current visual language. The prototypes were created based on two user flow scenarios, using Axure due to its advanced prototyping capabilities.
User testing
Testing was the most interesting part of the whole process. It was conducted online with the help of two Portuguese to English translators, and the prototypes were tested with 5 users in 50-minute sessions.
Changes and updates after the tests
The tests showed the need for a few minor changes. Then, after preparing the handoff, the application went into development.
